The papers contain personal and legal correspondence, business and financial records, speeches and addresses, and some miscellaneous items. There are business and financial papers for the firms of Byrnside Hale and French, Holston Salt and Plaster Company, John L. Williams & Sons, East River Railroad Company, New River Railroad Company, and Norfolk and Western Railroad. Correspondence is chiefly business and legal and pertains to debt collection, lawsuits and estate settlement. Some family letters are included. Topics of interest in the correspondence include a steamer trip up the Missouri River to Montana territory, 1867; opportunites in Ray County, Mo., 1836; Emory and Henry College, 1845; militia movements in southwest, Va., 1861; a mission to Lynchburg, Va., in 1865; a brief mention of slave sales, 1856; and the estate of Edward Hale of Portland Oregon, 1874. Correspondence of General John Echols of Staunton, Va., discusses his legal and financial affairs. Papers of Andrew Johnston, father of James D. Johnston contain a copy of his will, guardianship accounts and papers pertaining to a lawsuit. There are speeches and addresses by James D. Johnston on temperance, the debt question in Virginia, politics and the fourth of July. Miscellaneous items include student essays of Johnston at Emory and Henry; an undated war story; and a memorandum of the expense of building a brick house; and Bank of Abingdon stock certificates.
